Chewing difficulties are generally attributed to stiffness and pain originating in the jaw muscles. It is also associated to teeth problems which make it difficult for the individual to chew hard foods.

Xerostomia or dry mouth Dry mouth can be caused due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and side effects of anti depressants.

Stiffness and resulting pain in the jaw muscles also a repercussion of radiation therapy given to the neck and jaw

Tooth grinding and clenching the jaw(Night grinding habit) Mucositis inflammation, pain and soreness in the mouth

Periodontal gum disease

 Tooth decay and loss

 Changes to the mouth, tongue and jaw due to cancers such as oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer

 Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders

 Facial fractures

 Gingivitis

 Glossitis

Tooth pains, gum pain and denture complications are evaluated and treatments are prescribed to prevent further damage and deterioration of mastication. Range of the motion of the jaw and physical examination along with x-rays and CT scan are other evaluations that may be carried out to reveal jaw and chewing problems.
